By-the-Wind Sailor
In the spring and early summer on the beaches in Central California, it is not uncommon to find hundreds of small, dark blue creatures washed up on beaches. Commonly called “by-the-wind sailors,” these unique animals have a translucent “sail” perpendicular to oval flat “bodies.”
These fascinating creatures are often thought to be jellyfish, but though related to jellies, they are colonial hydroids, made up of a colony of many very small animals. The scientific name is: Velella velella.
By-the-wind sailors are carried across the sea by ocean currents and wind. They end up on beaches when prevailing winds land them there. They have little control over their fate.
Your life can be like this in some ways, without an awareness of the influence of unconscious depths. With awareness and insight into these depths, your life can be less like a “by-the-wind sailor” adrift at sea.
